What is ITP

So you have just found out you have ITP – welcome to the club!

If you are anything like me your mind will be running wild right about now. I must have had a zillion google searches going at once just trying to wrap my head around the situation I am facing.

Therefore I am going to try and keep this very simple and basic. You have just been diagnosed with a condition called ITP Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. It’s a condition where your immune system is basically attacking itself. To break it down even further the immune system is attacking your platelets (platelets are necessary for clotting your blood). The lower your platelets go the more risk you have from bleeding. Below is a graph to help explain the risks associated with your platelet count.
ITP Risk of bleeding

To me this graph has really helped keep me level headed and I have also used it as a guide to help me with deciding what treatment I wish to proceed with.

Is this condition curable? To my knowledge no – however there have been many cases where people have gone into remission so there is hope.

Is this condition life threatening? Yes it can be however with modern education and technology there is many different tricks the medical profession have up their sleeves to help combat this condition.

What are the warning signs? Everybody with this condition has different signs that will showcase there levels have dropped. But here are the basics: fatigue, skin rashes and bruising.

Well there you have it these are the basics of the condition and hopefully this information will help enlighten you on what you are up against.
